Balance within and balance without are essential for healthy living and success in action. With age, unfortunately, our sense of balance can deteriorate. Much of that effect is not aging per se, but rather the result of years of stress, dis-use, and fatigue. As Walter Bortz, MD, says, “We simply don’t energize the system enough.”

Balance is a state of equilibrium. Outwardly, it manifests as “head up, feet on the ground.” More subtly, it manifests as grace in motion — poise in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. Inwardly, balance is a state of equipoise that pervades our attitudes and relations supporting sustained engagement in community activism and caring for the world.
