Harnessing the Economy to Reduce Carbon Emissions

October 27, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Tax CO2The need is real:  Intense heat waves, extreme wildfires, worsening floods, melting polar ice caps, and rising seas indicate that climate change is here now. Yet our civilization keeps pumping CO2 into the atmosphere because fossil fuels are artificially “cheap.”

What we can do:

  • Harness the power of money and markets by placing a rising fee on fossil fuels so their prices gradually reflect their true costs, and the economy will hasten the deployment of clean energy alternatives.
  • Protect family budgets by returning all carbon fees to American taxpayers through a regular “carbon dividend” check, and build the political stability that industry needs to make the transition to low-carbon energy.

Speaker:  After a 35-year career in Emergency Medicine, Dr. Joseph now leads the Marin chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. His proposal for a U.S. carbon price has twice won in the MIT Climate CoLab contest. He will explain this elegant proposal, sharing slides, a video, and insights from his recent trip to Greenland.

Bill Carney, board president of Sustainable San Rafael, will moderate the evening, which will include an opening meditation led by Maeve Murphy, a short presentation on “Laudato Si,” the Papal Encyclical on caring for Creation, by Father Bob Haberman, Campus Ministry Director, plus reports from local organizations that are making a difference.  Closing prayer by Green Sangha organizer Grace Severtson.

A presentation of Green Sangha & Dominican University Campus Ministry. Co-sponsors: Resilient Neighborhoods and Sustainable San Rafael.
