TELA position: intern

Teen Environmental Leadership Academy, July 15-26, 2013

Internship description:  Assist directors and work closely with participants: take daily attendance, administer surveys, and monitor assignments; model and support full engagement; set up materials and media for films and guest speakers; provide leadership in community-building games and opening & closing rituals; learn and utilize skills of listening, responding, and directing; model speech-giving, assist speech-writing, and provide supportive feedback. Lead mindful practice on at least three occasions. Arrive 8:30 each day to greet, take attendance, arrange materials, and set a positive tone for the day; stay till 4:00 on most days for reflection and planning. Attend orientation on the weekend before the program.

Qualifications:
1. Experience working with young people (e.g., tutoring, coaching, summer camp counseling)
2. Physical fitness and enthusiasm for a 4-mile hike, an hour of folk dancing, or a morning of garden chores
3. Group leadership experience (e.g., scouts, 4-H, school club)
4. Daily meditation practice, or desire and willingness to adopt one
5. Strong interest in others and a friendly, non-judgmental approach to all
6. Willingness to model and practice effective speaking skills
7. Ability to organize and manage details
8. Love of nature and strong interest in environmental issues
9. Willingness to learn:  receiving and giving constructive feedback

Compensation: $800 for the two weeks, including a possible evening presentation to the community in the second week, along with family gathering on the last night. Lunch included.
